*6/1-3/06 - Region IV Headstart Leadership Institute
Tampa, FL - Keynote
"the straw that didn't break the camel's back"
www.rivhsa.org

Coping with the demands of risk management, the new federal review format excluding positive feedback and an exit interview, motivating staff who are trying to manage continuous change, could deplete the aspiration of any leader. What will it take for us to not only endure all challenges but to lead with hope and optimism? This session explores leadership strategies that will enhance your effectiveness and help your agency grow through challenging times.

6/4 - From the universal to the uniform: considering cultural and diversity standards across personal and professional connections

The NAEYC code of ethical conduct requires Kioko to speak directly with her team teacher, Ella when Kioko has a concern about Ellen's behavior. Kioko was raised to never directly confront another person. At the nexus of standards and cultural differences, human challenges arise. What is the 'right' thing to do? Join us for a lively, interactive session on 'who's standards are these, anyway?'

6/6 - When Standards are Ahead of Traditions: "But We've Always Done it This Way..."
The Brown vs Topeka board of education Supreme Court decision in 1954 set invaluable standards for change. Despite this, school systems resisted the new standards. What can we do when standards are ahead of traditions?

6/26-/30 - Leading the Change; Family Friendly Programs
A one week 3-credit Wheelock College graduate/undergraduate course
offered at the Dorchester, MA, cluster for early childhood professionals, Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club
Contact: Ellen Lucas at elucas@danmarrclub.org

This course was developed for directors of existing full-day care centers to help them improve the quality of the service they provide to children and their families. The course is intended to introduce new concepts not commonly included in a course for directors, and to update the participants's knowledge. Partipants will learn the most recent research findings on the elements of quality, new approaches to mission statements and the director's role in achieving and maintaining quality, concepts of family-friendly service, basic marketing concepts, the Birkman approach to leadership, total quality management, uses of technology, and new ways of looking at the center as part of the community support system for parents.

Comments from past attendees of this workshop:

"It is a workshop like no other and you will come away with knowing how to handle some pretty tough situations."

"As a result of the information I received at the workshop, I have already made adjustments to my parent handbook. I am also working on the grant which would allow me the opportunity to create a program to reach to families."

"I am the Business Manager at our center, so I don't really attend many
workshops, but I felt this was really important for me to attend. Perhaps some centers don't look beyond teachers and directors to attend. I am constantly the person that the staff looks towards to identify qualifed pick-up people if there is a question, perhaps because I answer the phone and I am the first person families see in the office, so I get the bulk of the questionable situations."

"It was practical, focused on real issues and balanced law/policy with ethically honoring family cultures."
